Salmon Report - August 21, 2013

Published by Jason Bellows on 20th Aug 2013

The Salmon fishing in the Shuswap River system is picking up and there are some nice clean fish being taken out of the popular fishing holes. Cook Creek and Kingfisher are a couple of spots that will produce fish on roe or lures. I have spent several hours fishing that river so if you have any questions, please come by the shop and speak to me about it.

Anglers on Mable Lake have taken fish off their down riggers between 80'-120' in depth. The J-Plugs, Lymans, Apex and spoons will work well for you out there.

Little Shuswap lake is also now open and the Salmon are going to be holding much the same as in Mable. The ticket to success in the open water is use use your fish finder to locate the Salmon school and then stick with them down at the proper depth. Keep making passes through the school until you annoy them enough for a strike.

Effective August 22nd at 00:01 the Thompson River from Kamloops Lake down stream to the confluence on the Fraser river will be closed. This closure will also include Kamloops lake.

I have posted the link to the fisheries notices, please check these daily for any closures. This year we are experiencing lower than normal water levels and higher than normal temperatures. Fisheries will take the necessary actions to ensure enough salmon reach their spawning beds. These water conditions will lead to high pre-spawn mortality rates and that in turn will result in the mid season closures.
