Sun, Sun and more Sun!
I managed to slip out yesterday and enjoy a quiet day on Shuswap Lake. The sun was shining and it was quite comfortable out there in my little tin boat. I landed 2 fish and lost 4 others with the largest to the net being 21 inches and a healthy 4.5lb bar of chrome. The Little Brown Trout produced 3 fish while the Tequila Sunrise hit 2 and a nickel red head Dick Nite hooked one near the end of the day which weighed in at about 1.5lbs. I worked the shore line around Harolds Park and found most of my success. I did try fishing down towards Paradise Point where I hit one little fish that managed to spit the hook right after the fight began. I was running my electric trolling motor quite slow at under 1MPH so that the type 6 wet line could get down as deep as possible. I ran all of the line out and got into the backing about 40 feet or so. There are several customers having success along the bluffs at Sunnybrae, over at Canoe Plywood Plant and Murdoch Point to name a few of the favourite spots. The forecast for the Shuswap is showing all sun for the Easter weekend so come on down, grab your supplies, and head on out to the lake for what will be a fantastic weekend of fishing!
I did see a lot of Chironomid activity when I was out on Wednesday. I think that most people over look the hatches on these big lakes but fish will certainly be feeding on those Chironomids and for the angler who chooses to drift or anchor up and cast, there may be some amazing fishing to be had. Cast towards the shore line and pay close attention to that indicator, some of the takes will be very subtle and if your caught sleeping, they will spit the hook before you set it. You have a chance to pick up several different species of fish in Shuswap Lake and fishing Chironomids will get you into many of them. White fish is a species that we seldom see in there but their numbers are strong and Chironomid fishing can put them on the end of your line. Myron Chironomid fished Murdoch point yesterday and landed several White fish that put up a great fight and entertained for hours.
White Lake is open and reporting some moody fishing. Leach patterns should yield a few fish and with this sun, the chironomids will start to hatch and get the fish feeding to provide anglers with some exciting indicator fishing.
The Skimikin chain of lakes are showing signs of ice off with the shore lines now exposed. It will be another week or two before they are ready to fish, however.
